Most South Africa ADRs trading on the NYSE or NASDAQ are mining stocks, including DRDGOLD Ltd (NYSE: DRD), Gold Fields Limited (NYSE: GFI), Harmony Gold Mining Co (NYSE: HMY), Randgold Resources Ltd (NASDAQ: GOLD) (merged with Canada’s Barrick Gold Corp in December 2018) and Sibanye Stillwater Ltd (NYSE: SBGW). Some of these South African mining stocks have mining operations in other African countries or elsewhere in the world.
Other South African ADRs trading on major US stock exchanges include MiX Telematics Ltd (NYSE: MIXT), a provider of software-as-a- service (SaaS) fleet and mobile asset management solutions; Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: UEPS), a provider of payment solutions and transaction processing services; and Sasol Limited (NYSE: SSL), an integrated energy and chemicals company operating globally. In addition, there are a number of interesting South African stocks with listings on the over-the-counter (OTC) market who also have exposure or do business in other African countries or even globally.

The JSE Limited
With origins dating back to 1887, the JSE Limited, which was previously known as the JSE Securities Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, is the largest stock exchange in Africa. In addition, the Alternative Exchange (AltX) is a stock exchange that was founded in 2003 as a division of the JSE to accommodate small- and medium-sized high growth companies and to encourage entrepreneurship – especially among South Africa’s emerging black middle class.
