Most Greece ADRs or Greek stocks with listings on major US exchanges are actually shipping stocks with their headquarters in Greece with most (if not all) of their business stemming from overseas trading. The performance of these Greek shipping stocks would be closely tied to the performance of the global economy and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rather than the economy of Greece.
Prior to its circa 2015 delisting, the National Bank of Greece SA (NYSE: NBG) was the primary Greek stock and Greece ADR for foreign investors. In addition, the Coca Cola HBC AG (OTCMKTS: CCHGY) has its origins in the Hellenic Bottling Company S.A. and is the world’s third-largest Coca-Cola anchor bottler in terms of volume with operations in 30 (mostly emerging market) countries on three continents. However, Coca Cola HBC AG is now headquartered in Switzerland with its main overseas listing being on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) rather than the NYSE.
Since many of the remaining Greek ADRs listed on the OTC are not actively trading, investors interested in investing in Greek stocks should also check out our Greece ETF list and Emerging Europe ETFs (Region Wide) list.
Note: Stocks delisted from the OTC (whether due to mergers, acquisitions or for other reasons) have been left in the table (as their websites still provide a good feel for the company and the local market) and may still trade on local or other important European stock exchanges (e.g. London, Amsterdam etc). They may also be holdings of country or region specific ETFs or Indices.
